Laser hair removal works!

Laser hair removal - dermatologist - Mystic, CT

How laser hair removal works at Coastal Dermatology in Mystic, CT

Dr. Duke and her staff have been performing laser hair removal for more than 20 years. As the technology and science of the laser hair removal procedure has evolved, so have we. The biology of laser hair removal has not changed since it was discovered. That is, the laser light selectively injures the hair bulb, or follicle base. This causes permanent hair removal over a series of treatments. The laser light can only see melanin, so the procedure is effective for dark hair only.

What you need to know about laser hair removal

Here is what you need to know about laser hair removal:

  • The procedure ONLY works for dark hairs, not gray/white/blond hairs
  • It is a series of treatments, usually 6 though it can be less or more depending on your hair type and skin type and hair density
  • The sessions can last 15 minutes for a small site, and up to one hour for a large site
  • The sessions are spaced 4-6 weeks apart
  • It is preferable if you are not tan and not in the sun during the series of treatments
  • With the laser that we use, the procedure is safe for all skin types
  • The procedure may be mildly uncomfortable during the procedure; we generally just use pre-ice as an anesthetic
  • After the procedure, the treatment site is usually red and may be slightly swollen for a day or so
