Minimize Your Pores

Treatments Smooth Skin Texture Tone - Groton Norwich & Stonington CT, RI

Is this your skin issue?

  • Some people are plagued by the constant formation of whiteheads and blackheads and constantly enlarging pores.
  • Do you keep buying different products to shrink or unclog your pores?

The Science: Why we get clogged pores and blackheads

Prominent pores, whiteheads, and blackheads are all related to the functioning of the oil gland. Some skin, based on genetic qualities, have more active oil glands-creating higher amounts of sebum which clog the exit to the skin and enlarges or fills the pore. Some oil glands produce normal amounts of sebum, but the quality of the sebum, or the way the sebaceous gland cells (“sebocytes”) function cause the gland exit canal, or pore, to get clogged. These cellular activities can lead to enlarged pores, whiteheads, blackheads, and acne breakouts.

The Solution: Skin treatments to reduce enlarged or clogged pores

There are several in-office no downtime skin procedures, along with specific types of skin care products, that effectively minimize these clogged pore issues.

Microdermabrasion: Specially graded diamond tipped wands are moved over the skin to remove dead cells and increase cell turnover. The wand also has a negative vacuum pressure which aids in physically removing both the surface and clogged pore cellular debris. Medical microdermabrasion, still a no downtime procedure but stronger and more effective than a lower grade spa device, can help unclog your skin.

Chemical Peels: The superficial chemical peels done in our office use natural ingredients blended to create unique combinations of ingredients for specific skin issues. In this way, we can personalize the type of chemical peels applied to your skin. No downtime chemical peels can help reduce pores, whiteheads, and blackheads. For more aggressive chemical peel sessions, a medical microdermabrasion is done first directly followed by one of our personalized chemical peels.

Laser Genesis or RevLite Laser Peel: Lasers are a medical device which have changed and dramatically advanced the way we treat skin issues. The definition of a laser can help you better understand why your laser procedure is so safe and effective. Laser light of a certain wavelength improves pores by causing new collagen to grow and by heating up the oil gland debris which facilitates its natural removal. The results from these no downtime lasers are visible that same day, though gain over a series of treatments. Both the Laser Genesis  and Revlite Laser Peel are non ablative-so they do not affect the top layer of skin but rather stimulate new cells to grow under the skin to create smaller pores.

Acne Laser

OmniLux Blue for acne: Omnilux Blue™ is FDA-cleared to treat moderate inflammatory acne using innovative Blue Light (photo dynamic therapy) technology to effectively target and destroy the bacteria that causes acne -- without affecting surrounding skin. Treatments are fast and safe - with most cases being effectively reduced in eight quick treatments over a 4-week period.

Omniliux Blue™ utilizes a panel of more than 1,700 focused diodes to ensure proper power density over a uniform beam profile. It delivers a unique 408nm wavelength blue light that closely matches the peak absorption qualities of the targeted acne bacteria. This blue light creates a highly toxic environment for the superficial acne bacteria, which induces bacterial death and clears the skin from acne.

Dr. Duke also offers Omnilux Red,™ which is similar to an Omnilux Blue™ treatment, but the red light penetrates deeper into the skin. Some patients receive a combination of red light and blue light during their series of treatments.

Omnilux Blue™ can clear most moderate inflammatory acne in as little as eight treatment sessions (twice a week for four weeks). Most patients achieve up to a 70 percent improvement in breakouts. Improvement continues even after the series of treatments have been completed. Each 20 minute treatment session is easy, painless, and safe, and involves no downtime,

Physician Strength Skin Care Products: Cleansing the skin with products that remove dead cellular debris, such as alpha hydroxy acid cleansers or micro bead cleansers, can empty out pores and thus minimize their appearance. Creams, serums, or pads that contain glycolic acids or retinols (Vitamin A) also empty pores, and reduce whitehead and blackhead formation.
